How Your Accounting Software is Like a Firework

July is a very festive time of year. There are BBQs, pool parties, family reunions and, of course, fireworks! I don’t know about you, but we here at Devine love fireworks! They are fun, unique and put a smile on everyone’s face. But be cautious, there is also a dangerous side to fireworks. If you think about it, your accounting software can kind of be like a firework. With the right software your accounting can look beautiful and give you a great picture of your business’s success, but the wrong software can be a little more dangerous.

When you choose an accounting software, you typically pick one that works for you at that time. Which makes complete sense! There is no need to invest in something overly complex when you are just starting out or at a smaller level. However, as you grow your needs will change. That is what we mean when we compare fireworks to your accounting software. If you have the software that you need, you can see the beauty of how successful your business is. But if you have outgrown your software, you will be in a dangerous place of frustration and confusion and the pulse of your business may be difficult to find. You have several accounting software options to choose from. Most of our clients use one of the following.

1. QuickBooks

QuickBooks is a great option for small to medium size businesses. We suggest using QuickBooks Online since that is a cloud-based solution, no messing with servers or hosting. Also, you can access your information on any device, which is handy for the on-the-go business owner! Another nice thing about QuickBooks is it is pretty user friendly. As a non-accountant it can be overwhelming when trying to find or input certain accounting information. QuickBooks is intuitive and has online tutorials to help if you need it.

2. Sage Intacct

Sage Intacct is the perfect option for larger, multi-entity companies. Industries like property management and construction can really benefit from this software. More good news, Sage Intacct is also a cloud-based option, so no more stress with servers and hosting. Another benefit of Sage Intacct is that it has a more robust reporting system, making it easier to customize and create specialty reports. Another thing to keep in mind is Sage Intacct is an excellent choice for a project-based business. This software can provide more tools to give you an accurate picture of how each project is doing financially.

Make sure you are on the right side of the firework and make sure you have the best accounting software for your business! Interested in learning more about Sage Intacct or another software option? Call us today at 281-545-4000!

I'm an experienced finance professional with more than 20 years of experience. I've held several Controller positions throughout my career, most notably with an internationally respected commercial real estate investment, management, and brokerage firm. In this role, I was responsible for all aspects of accounting across the company's many operational divisions - including internet services, real estate development, property management, and brokerage services. As our company operated in multiple countries and currencies, it was essential to me that all financial reports were accurate and compliant.
