Looking back and looking ahead

Looking back and looking ahead

The day before a recent award show, I found myself having a bit of a moment if you will. It looked like I was struggling to find a dress to wear, but I think I was really just having a moment of reflection.

I started Devine Consulting 10 years ago with just a glimmer of hope. It was a complete leap of faith leaving my comfortable, corporate job, but I needed a challenge. And a challenge I got! With four kids at home to support and some startup debt, the pressure felt enormous. But I was determined to be successful.

As I look back at the last 10 years, there were days I just wanted to give up, and I wondered why I even started this business. There were also days when you shift, learn something new and develop skills you can offer to your clients. Maybe you can relate?

Running a business can beat you down, but you keep going, do the right thing and wake up every day to try again. You do your best to stay positive and you ask for help when you need it. And then one day, you might wake up and feel successful. For me, that day was when I was given an award from my alma mater for being among the top 100 fastest-growing businesses. For anyone who gets to feel that feeling, they know it feels a lot like “it was worth it”.

As I look to the year ahead, I think about all of you, our clients, and wonder whether or not you have felt successful yet. If the answer is no, then the next question is, how can we help you get there? You may get knocked down, but if you dust yourself off and get back out there, success will be found, however, you may define it. You’ve got this! And we’re here to cheer you on in 2022.

I'm an experienced finance professional with more than 20 years of experience. I've held several Controller positions throughout my career, most notably with an internationally respected commercial real estate investment, management, and brokerage firm. In this role, I was responsible for all aspects of accounting across the company's many operational divisions - including internet services, real estate development, property management, and brokerage services. As our company operated in multiple countries and currencies, it was essential to me that all financial reports were accurate and compliant.
